Convert GIF to MP4
Turn your GIFs into much lighter, more compatible MP4 videos.
Turn your animated GIFs into MP4 videos: the file takes up much less space and can be uploaded to social networks and apps that don’t accept GIFs. We keep every frame and its timing, with no sign-up and no watermarks.
How to convert GIF to MP4
- Select your animated GIFs (up to 20 at once).
- Click “Convert to MP4”.
- Download the MP4, or a ZIP if you converted several GIFs.
Why convert GIF to MP4
- It takes up much less space: the GIF format compresses each frame almost separately; an MP4 video (H.264) takes advantage of what repeats between frames. With typical animations, the MP4 is usually several times smaller than the GIF.
- You can upload it where GIFs aren’t accepted: Instagram, for example, doesn’t let you post GIFs, but it does accept MP4 videos.
- Faster websites: replacing heavy GIFs on a page with MP4 videos is one of the speed improvements Google recommends.
What we keep from the GIF
- Every frame, with its timing: the animation lasts the same and plays at the same speed.
- The colours: the video is encoded in the format every phone and browser plays.
What changes
- Transparency: MP4 doesn’t support it, so the GIF’s transparent areas become white.
- Looping: a GIF repeats on its own, but an MP4 plays once, unless the app or the website repeats it (on a web page, with the video’s “loop” attribute).
- Dimensions: an MP4 video needs an even width and height; if your GIF is, say, 301 pixels wide, the video will be 300.
Limitations
- Up to 20 GIFs at once, up to 20 MB each and 100 MB in total.
- The MP4 has no sound, because the GIF didn’t have any either.
Frequently asked questions
How much smaller is an MP4 than a GIF?
It depends on the animation, but with typical GIFs the MP4 is usually several times smaller. When the conversion finishes, you will see how much you saved with your file.
How do I upload a GIF to Instagram?
Instagram doesn’t accept GIFs in posts, but it does accept videos. Convert the GIF to MP4 here and upload the video like any other.
Does the MP4 video loop like the GIF?
The MP4 file plays once; whether it repeats depends on where you put it. Many social networks loop short videos automatically, and on a website you just add the “loop” attribute to the video.
What happens to my GIF’s transparent background?
It becomes white, because the MP4 format doesn’t support transparency. The rest of the animation stays the same.
Why use MP4 instead of GIF on a website?
Because the video is much lighter and the page loads faster. Google recommends it in its performance guides for large animations.
