Edit PDF

Change the text in a PDF and add images or your signature, without uploading it.

Your signature

Sign with your mouse, finger or a stylus inside the box.

Edit your PDF right in the browser: change the text it already has, type your own, cover what you don't want to show, highlight, draw freehand, insert an image or add your signature. The file is not uploaded to any server: everything happens on your device and you download the edited PDF when you're done, with no sign-up and no watermark.

How to edit a PDF

  1. Choose the PDF or drop it into the box. The editor opens full screen.
  2. To change text in the PDF, click it and type. To add something, pick a tool from the bar (Text, Cover, Highlight, Draw, Mark, Image or Signature) and click where you want it.
  3. Move, rotate, duplicate, resize or recolour anything you have added. If you make a mistake, press “Undo”.
  4. Press “Download PDF” to save a copy with your changes.

What you can do with the editor

Tool What it's for
Change text Click a line in the PDF to fix a typo, a date or an amount. It opens with its own text, size and colour; empty it and it's gone.
Text Fill in a form that has no fields, or add a note, a date or a correction. You choose the font (sans-serif, serif or handwriting), bold, the size and the colour.
Cover Hide a detail under a white or coloured box, for example before sharing a document.
Highlight Mark what matters in yellow (or another colour), like a highlighter pen.
Draw Freehand strokes, lines, arrows, rectangles and ellipses: underline, circle, cross out or point.
Mark Put a tick (✓), a cross (✗) or a dot in the boxes of a form, or today’s date, with a single click.
Image Insert a logo, a stamp or a photo (JPG or PNG).
Signature Draw your signature with the mouse or your finger, type your name in handwriting or use a photo of your signature on paper, and place it anywhere. More on this in sign a PDF.

Everything you add is written into the PDF itself, not as a separate layer: it looks the same in Adobe Acrobat, in the browser or on a phone, and the text you type can be searched and copied.

How changing the existing text works

As you move the mouse over the document, the lines of text you can change are outlined. Click one and it turns into a text box with what it said: correct it and you're done. When you download, the old text is removed from the file, not just covered up: anyone who copies or searches the PDF will find the new text, not the old one.

The new text is set in our font (Noto Sans, or Noto Serif if the original has serifs, and in bold if it was bold), not the document's original one, which is almost never fully included in the PDF. On a single corrected line it is barely noticeable; if you want a whole paragraph to match, change all of its lines.

Your PDF never leaves your device

Most online editors upload your file to their servers to process it. Ours works inside your browser: the PDF is opened, edited and saved on your computer or phone, and we never receive it. That is why you can use it for contracts, payslips or documents with personal data with the same peace of mind as installed software. The only thing that reaches us when you download is an anonymous notice that the editor was used, without the file or its content.

Write in any language

Text is set in fonts that we embed in the PDF, so it displays correctly even if whoever opens it doesn't have them installed: accents and alphabets such as Greek, Cyrillic or Arabic (right to left, with the letters properly joined).

Limitations

  • Text is changed line by line: lines don't reflow as they would in a word processor, so longer text won't push down the line below. If you need to rewrite a lot, convert the PDF to Word, edit it there and save it as a PDF again.
  • A scanned PDF is an image with no text to change: you can only cover it and write on top. The same goes for rotated or vertical text.
  • Covering is not the same as deleting. The box hides the detail on screen and in print, but the original text is still inside the PDF and could be copied or extracted. To remove sensitive data for good, use dedicated redaction software.
  • Password-protected PDFs, or PDFs that don't allow changes, cannot be opened.
  • If the PDF had a certificate-based digital signature, editing it makes that signature invalid.
  • Fillable form fields are kept and can still be filled in with your PDF reader, but the editor does not fill them in: write outside them, as a field can cover anything you place on top of it. Dynamic (XFA) forms cannot be opened.
  • Up to 100 MB and 500 pages. With very long documents, an older phone may be slower.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to edit a PDF online here?

Yes: the PDF is not uploaded to any server. It is opened and edited inside your browser, and the edited file is saved straight to your device. We never receive the file or its content.

Can I change the text that is already in the PDF?

Yes: click the line you want to change and type. When you download, the old text is removed from the file and the new one stays, at the same size and colour. A scanned document has no text to change, so you would have to cover it and write on top.

How do I fill in a PDF form that has no fields?

Choose the Text tool, click the line or box you want to fill in and type. You can adjust the size so it fits and drag it into place.

Does the edited PDF have a watermark?

No. The editor is free, needs no account and adds no watermark or any other text to the PDF: only what you put there.

Can I edit a PDF on my phone?

Yes, in any up-to-date browser on Android or iPhone. You can type, draw and sign with your finger. With PDFs of hundreds of pages, an older phone may take longer to open them.
