Convert MP4 to JPG
Save a photo from any moment of an MP4 video, or one every few seconds.
Convert an MP4 video into JPG images: choose the exact second and download that frame as a photo, or get one photo every few seconds and keep the best one. The images come out at the video’s resolution, with no sign-up and no watermarks.
How to convert MP4 to JPG
- Select your MP4 video.
- Type the second of the video where the photo you want is.
- Choose “Just that moment” or one photo every 1, 2, 5 or 10 seconds, and click “Convert to JPG”.
- Download the JPG, or a ZIP with the photos numbered in order.
What getting photos from a video is for
- Keeping a moment you only filmed: a goal, a smile, the candles being blown out.
- Making a thumbnail for YouTube, a website or a presentation, with a real frame from the video itself.
- Reviewing a movement step by step: a sports technique, a tutorial or a screen recording, with one photo every second.
How to find the exact second
Play the video on your computer or phone and pause it at the moment you want: the player shows the elapsed time (for example, 1:23 is 83 seconds). You can fine-tune it to tenths of a second. If you can’t pin it down, choose one photo every second starting a little earlier and keep the best one from the ZIP.
One photo or several
- Just that moment: a single JPG with the frame at the chosen second.
- Every 1, 2, 5 or 10 seconds: one photo at that interval from the chosen second, until the end of the video or up to 50, in a ZIP with the photos numbered in order (holiday-01.jpg, holiday-02.jpg… if the video is called holiday.mp4).
The JPG quality is set to 90: a sharp photo that doesn’t take up much space. Raise it to 95 if you are going to print it.
How good a video frame is
The photo has the video’s resolution: 1920 × 1080 pixels in a Full HD video (about 2 megapixels) and 3840 × 2160 in 4K (about 8). That’s less than a photo taken with the camera, and in scenes with a lot of movement the frame may be slightly blurred, because each image in a video lasts a fraction of a second. Videos filmed in portrait come out in portrait.
If you want an animation rather than a photo, convert the clip from MP4 to GIF.
Limitations
- One video at a time, up to 100 MB, and 40 megapixels per frame (enough for 8K videos).
- Up to 50 photos per video. For more, convert the video in several rounds starting at different seconds.
- Videos take a little longer than images: the conversion runs in the background and the page lets you know when it’s ready.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get a photo from an MP4 video?
Upload the video, type the second where the photo is and leave “Just that moment” selected. When you click “Convert to JPG”, you’ll download that frame as a JPG image.
Can I extract every frame of a video?
Not every one: a video has between 24 and 60 per second, so you would get thousands of almost identical images. Here you can get at most one photo per second and 50 per video, which is enough to pick the best one.
What resolution are photos taken from a video?
The video’s own: 1280 × 720 pixels in HD, 1920 × 1080 in Full HD and 3840 × 2160 in 4K. We don’t enlarge the image, because that would only make it blurrier.
How do I make a thumbnail for my video from a frame?
Find the second with the best image, save it as a JPG and upload it as the thumbnail. If the platform asks for a different size, adjust it with the image resizing tool.
Why is the photo blurry?
Because there was movement at that instant, and each video frame is a very short exposure, but not an instantaneous one. Choose a stiller moment, or get one photo every second around that point and keep the sharpest.
