Keep just the sound of an MP4 video, as an MP3.

One file at a time, up to 100 MB.

Your files are deleted automatically after conversion, and no later than one hour after upload. How we handle your files

Extract the audio from an MP4 video and save it as an MP3: a recorded class or talk, an interview, a voice memo filmed with your phone or the music of a video of your own. You get a high-quality MP3 that plays everywhere, with no sign-up and no watermarks.

How to convert MP4 to MP3

  1. Select your MP4 video (up to 100 MB).
  2. Click “Convert to MP3”.
  3. Wait a few seconds while we extract the sound.
  4. Download the MP3.

Why turn a video into an MP3

  • Listen without the screen: a lecture, a webinar or a podcast recorded on video can be heard on your phone with the screen off, in the car or while you do something else.
  • Much smaller files: the sound of a video takes up a fraction of the video itself, which makes it easy to send by email or messaging apps.
  • Use it in other programs: audio editors, transcription tools and podcast platforms usually ask for an audio file, not a video.

What quality is the MP3

We encode the sound in high-quality variable bitrate MP3 (around 190 kbit/s on average): the encoder uses more data in rich passages and less in silences. For speech and for most music it is indistinguishable from the original, and a minute of audio takes up roughly 1.4 MB.

The sound of an MP4 is already compressed (usually in AAC), so the MP3 can’t sound better than the video: it keeps its quality, but doesn’t add any.

What is kept and what isn’t

  • Kept: the first audio track of the video, with its channels (mono or stereo) and its sample rate.
  • Not kept: the image, the subtitles and any other audio tracks (for example, a second language).
  • Without metadata: the MP3 doesn’t carry the title, the date or the location the video might contain.

Limitations

  • We convert files, not links: the video has to be on your device. We don’t download videos from YouTube or other websites.
  • The whole audio is converted: to keep just a part, trim the MP3 afterwards with an audio editor.
  • A video without sound can’t be converted: you will see a message saying so.
  • One video at a time, up to 100 MB. The conversion runs in the background and takes a few seconds. If you need moments of the video instead of its sound, try MP4 to JPG or MP4 to GIF.

Frequently asked questions

Does the sound lose quality when converting MP4 to MP3?

Hardly. We use high-quality variable bitrate MP3, which for speech and most music sounds the same as the video. The audio of an MP4 is already compressed, so the MP3 keeps that quality but can’t improve it.

What bitrate does the MP3 have?

It is variable: around 190 kbit/s on average, with more data where the sound is complex and less in silences. That gives the quality of a high fixed bitrate in a smaller file.

Can I convert a YouTube video to MP3 here?

No. We only convert files you upload from your device, and we don’t download videos from YouTube or other websites. If you have the MP4 file of your own video, you can extract its sound here.

Can I extract just one part of the audio?

Not on this page: the whole sound of the video is converted. Once you have the MP3, you can cut the part you want with any audio editor, such as Audacity.

Will the MP3 play in my car or on my phone?

Yes. MP3 is the most compatible audio format: it plays on phones, computers, car stereos, smart speakers and practically any music player.
