Convert WebP to JPG
Open images downloaded from the web in any program.
Downloaded an image only to find it is a WebP? Convert it to JPG to open, edit or share it in any program, phone or service without compatibility issues. You can convert up to 20 images at once, with no sign-up and no watermarks.
How to convert WebP to JPG
- Select one or more WebP images (up to 20 at once).
- Adjust the quality if you like: we use 90 by default so the image does not lose more detail than necessary.
- Click “Convert to JPG”.
- Download the JPG or, if you converted several images, the ZIP with all of them.
Why so many images are WebP
Many websites serve their images as WebP because they are smaller than JPGs and pages load faster. That is why, when you save an image from your browser, you often end up with a .webp file.
The trouble comes afterwards: some editing programs and older image viewers cannot open it, and some forms, platforms and printing services only accept JPG or PNG. JPG, on the other hand, works practically everywhere.
Which quality to choose
Most WebP images are already compressed with loss. Converting them to JPG compresses them again, so it is best not to squeeze too hard:
- 90 (default): keeps the image virtually identical to the WebP. The best choice for editing or printing.
- 75 to 85: if you want a small file, for example to send through a messaging app.
It is normal for the JPG to be larger than the original WebP: WebP compresses better, which is exactly what makes it attractive for websites.
Transparency and animations
- Transparency: WebP supports it and JPG does not. Transparent areas are filled with white. If you need to keep it, convert to PNG instead.
- Animated WebP: JPG is a still-image format, so the first frame of the animation is converted.
| WebP | JPG | |
|---|---|---|
| Compatibility | Browsers and recent software | Practically universal |
| Transparency | Yes | No |
| Animation | Yes | No |
| Size at the same quality | Smaller | Larger |
Limitations
- It does not restore quality: if the WebP was heavily compressed, the JPG will show the same flaws.
- Up to 20 files at once, 20 MB per file, 100 MB in total and 100 megapixels per image.
Frequently asked questions
Why are the images I download from the internet in WebP?
Because many websites use WebP to make their pages load faster: it takes up less space than JPG at similar quality. Your browser saves the image in the same format it received it in.
What happens if the WebP is animated?
JPG only supports still images, so the first frame of the animation is converted. The remaining frames are not included in the result.
Why is the JPG larger than the WebP?
Because WebP compresses better than JPG: at the same visual quality, the WebP is lighter. By converting, you gain compatibility in exchange for a somewhat larger file.
What happens to the transparency of a WebP when converting to JPG?
JPG does not support it, so transparent areas become white. If you want to keep it, convert the WebP to PNG instead of JPG.
Will I be able to open the JPG in any program?
Practically yes: JPG is the most widely supported image format there is. Photo editors, image viewers on every operating system, phones and printing services all open it.
